Jazz and Jess started out as just two characters I had created in High School, way back in 1997.
At it's beginning, the comic didn't really have a direction. With help from friends and also from previous writers Nick and Duke the future of the story was laid out. So much so, in fact, that one particular upcoming storyline has been written for a good three years!
Overview:
Characters:
They had no storyline, and the next few years were spent trying out different things.
However, it wasn't until 2005 that things started coming together. Working as part of a team in a call centre, I started drawing silly little call-centre based comics, using the two characters i'd been dragging around for all those years.
As the feedback on these was generally positive, I decided to set up a website and Jazz and Jess became a webcomic.
The comic usually updates on a Friday, and is hand-drawn, inked and then scanned into photoshop, where colour and dialogue is applied.
I regularly use the cartooning style that Jazz and Jess is drawn in for other artworks, which can be found HERE, on my DeviantArt page.
The storyline centers on the two main characters, Jazz and Jess, as well as their friends and journey to discover the secrets of the town they reside in. Jazz and Jess enter the story with no concept of what has gone before. Every night in their town, Funkytown, small groups of zombies appear, and Jazz and Jess spend their time dispatching these walking dead. The mystery of where the zombies come from, why Jazz and Jess do not remember their past, as well as the origin of the comics main antagonist, Evil Jazz, is the main focus of the story.
The comic references many popular television shows, movies and other cultural phenomena, espescially zombie-themed, such as The Evil Dead, Resident Evil, Lost, Heroes, and Transformers.
Jazz: Jazz is the slightly submissive green haired boyfriend of Jess. At present his full name, or even if 'Jazz' is his real name, has not been revealed. He works in a call centre called Suicide Direct, where an evil version of himself, Evil Jazz works as his boss. Jazz has no concept of where Evil Jazz comes from, though he is aware of Suicide Direct creating the Funkytown zombies. His prefered weapon against the zombies was his chainsaw, until the Japanese rockstar Jared Hunter gave him a personalised guitar-axe.
Jess: Jess is the outgoing, mildly brutish girlfriend of Jazz. Her full name was revealed on her Myspace page as Jessikka Davies. Like Jazz, she too suffers from memory loss. She seems to enjoy dispatching the zombies more than Jazz. She is not aware of where the zombies come from, Jazz's role in that, or the existence of Evil Jazz. It seems that she believes 'Evil Jazz' is Jazz's imaginary friend. She is also deathly afraid of squid. Her prefered weapon against the zombies is a fire-axe.
Evil Jazz: Evil Jazz is the main antagonist of the comic, and as yet his origins have not been revealed. He comes across as more intellectual and refined than Jazz himself, and is the sole manager of Suicide Direct. His reasons for creating the call centre, the zombies, and for employing Jazz have also yet to be revealed.
Ben: Ben is the laid back, yet gun-toting boyfriend of Harmony. It appears that they have been a couple since high school. He has long blue hair, tied back into a pony-tail, and seems to be somewhat of a hippy along with his girlfriend. Since his reappearance in the lives of Jazz and Jess it appears that he has become Jazz's best friend, just as they were in high school.
Harmony: Harmony is the winter clothing wearing, hippy girlfriend of Ben. She is not often present in the comic without her boyfriend, and does not seem to spend too much time with the main characters herself. Like her boyfriend, she was friends with Jazz and Jess in high school.
Enika: Enika is Jess's best friend from high school. She is a purple haired punk-type, who used to have a crush on Jazz back in school. She has since re-met Jazz and Jess, though she does not seem sure of where her allegiance falls. Since it was revealed that she is intimate with Evil Jazz, she has since sought to re-establish her friendship with Jess. It also appears that she may have some slight mental issues, revolving around her teddy-bear, Spookybear.
Stevie: Stevie is another friend of Jazz and Jess from High School. He doesn't seem to be too close to Jazz and Jess, as he is rarely seen with them. He is an amateur film maker, though it would appear that his films are not very noteworthy. It also appears that he has somewhat of a crush on Harmony.
Jared Hunter: A Japanese rock star. He has only appeared once in the comic, during a short storyline where Jazz and Jess went to see him perform. Jess confesses that she is a fan of his work, and seeks an autograph. However he displays some fighting skills when taking out a nearby zombie. He hints to Jazz and Jess, whilst handing Jazz a custom guitar-axe, that he actually knew something strange was happening in Funkytown and also that his next destination had rumours of a man-wolf. Whether this means he is a monster-hunter of some sort has yet to be revealed.
